GAME INTRODUCTION


World of Summoner is a tabletop board game blending strategy, social deduction, and murder-mystery-inspired elements, developed and released collaboratively with my team. Designed for 3 to 9 players, each session lasts approximately 20 to 30 minutes. At the start of each session, players are randomly assigned to different factions and work toward their victory conditions through negotiation, resource management, and turn-based attack and defense mechanics. The game was produced and sold as a physical board game in Wuhan, with more than 500 copies sold.

Project Beginning

I first conceived and began developing this game during my sophomore year, working on it in my spare time as a way to apply and refine the game design and art skills I had been learning. In the early stages, I created paper prototypes and initial game art, then recruited several classmates to collaborate on the project. Together, we completed the first playtesting version of the game in 2016 and made it available for trial play.

Burning the Midnight Oil

As undergraduate students interested in game design and development, my team and I worked on this project with sustained commitment while balancing our regular coursework. We often continued development late into the night after classes and assignments. During class breaks, we invited other students to playtest the game at the campus center and used their feedback to refine the rules, pacing, and balance. We also held weekly design discussions and frequently coordinated remotely from our dormitories to keep the project moving forward.

Founding the Company

In the summer of 2016, we began promoting the board game on Modian.com and launched a crowdfunding campaign to support its production. After the campaign, we founded Wuhan KBOOM Network Tech Co. Ltd. as a student-run game studio to formalize the game's release and distribution. To promote the game, we produced a trailer and partnered with more than a dozen well-known board game stores in Wuhan to host public playtesting sessions and gameplay competitions. These efforts increased the game's local visibility and helped build an active player community around the project that year.

Award!

In late 2016, World of Summoner was invited by the Hubei Institute of Fine Arts for an on-campus exhibition and was later recommended by the institute to represent it in the Hubei Provincial "Chuangqingchun" College Student Entrepreneurship Competition. Our team won third place in the competition and received a pre-tax prize of 10,000 CNY (~$1,428).
